I recently had the opportunity to do a photo shoot for a local small business called Bertha’s Vinyl Shop.
I’m a huge music fan. I love the way it inspires and moves people. In a digital age, I also have a deep nostalgia for physical products: something I can see, hold, and feel like I’m getting what I paid for. That’s why I love Bertha’s Vinyl Shop.
A small business in Mt. Airy, MD, Bertha’s has the most incredible selection of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes. I could spend hours in the store sifting through old and new records, never knowing what I might find.
Loving the store so much, I approached Christy (the owner) about helping her improve her visual identity through photography. She was totally on board, so I went to the store one sunny morning and spent an hour photographing everything in her beautiful store.
I wanted to capture the warm ambient vibe of her shop, so I relied heavily on the natural light streaming in through the windows.
I then augmented that light with an off-camera flash to bring a bit of a 90s-inspired feel. I wanted to give Christy the option to go with either look, but still be able to use them together.
